Civilization~

On Friday/Saturday, Dave and I spent a little time and muscle on his house for a change and took down his old garage door and tracks and installed a brand new one!  It looks very nice and was not nearly as bad a job as we feared.  Well, it is a big job, but not nearly as dangerous as all the warnings would have you think. We have some final connections to do tonight, but we are very close.  It was very gratifying to get that done.  With that task well on its way, we sawed up the old wood door and loaded up the Element to bring the pieces up to the cabin to help fuel a few weekends worth of campfires!

So, Sunday we were up to the cabin.  Things are coming along on Sunset Trail!  What follows is a condensed "story of a new well:"

First, we dug ourselves a 4' trench under the deck.  The well digging company did not have a trencher that could go under the deck and we were not ready to dismantle the deck (although you can see, it does need a bit of a facelift too), so we decided to dig it ourselves.  It was a dirty job but I don't think it was quite as bad as either Dave or I expected/feared it would be.

About a week later, the guys showed up.  There were well diggers, plumbers and electricians involved.  I showed up on Day 2 of the operation (after the actual drillers had done their work), and found a lot of dirt!

While the plumbers, the well guy and the electricians worked, I checked out the water levels.  The water had been a little down (exposing a nice sandy beach!), but with the rains (and snow up North) of the last couple weeks, the water is up somewhat.  It is actually good because it is easier to get the boat in and out.  Our part of the lake has a sandy bottom and is very gradual and shallow out for quite a ways - great for swimming!

As you can see in the picture above, we have a lot of nice space without real close neighbors.  The next door neighbors on both sides have houses up on the hill so their lots near the lake are pretty wide open.  The neighbor to the south is a nice elderly widow (Marilyn) who lives there year round.  Her lot is doublewide (200') and mine is 100' - and she has no dock or boat anymore.  So there is not a dock or anything for about 300' feet to the south.  The neighbors to the north are a couple that is renting the year-round house there.  The house is quite nice (you could buy it for $330K, if you like?), and they seem nice.  They are a little younger than we are (early to mid-forties?) with no kids.  He is a prison warden and she is a probation officer so you all better behave when you visit!  (Just kidding...).

This is the scene as I left the house and the well digger and the plumbers and the electricians on Friday morning...  I was still a little worried but Marilyn promised to keep an eye on everything (ha!).

So, Dave and I went up yesterday to make sure things were working and get a little work done.  Dave worked on raking the yard, pulling up roots and putting some grass down.  Then he made some repairs on his boat (a square back canoe/fishing boat with trolling motor).  I worked inside the house and put some finishing touches on the water situation.  It is all shaping up very nicely!  We are ready for guests now!  Treetie and Ian are on schedule for this weekend.  All are welcome!

Water - both cold and hot - flows, toilet flushes, shower runs...

Spring!

I have been remiss in posting!  Here is the tree in our front yard - it is in it's very beautiful full blooming stage!

We are over halfway on the sharing of our home with Treetie.  She has been a good and easy house guest.  Next weekend we get Ian too and we are heading up to the cabin for at least part of the weekend.  It will be fun to have people up there to share the place!  My new well has been dug and tomorrow I go up there to meet the well digger, the plumber and the electrician to get everything hooked up.  So, for those of you who have been worried, we will have running water by the weekend.

Meredith is in Alaska!
